What You'll Have By The End Of This Guide

Setup time: ~15 minutes for your first batch of images

Skill level: Beginner. If you can copy-paste into ChatGPT and rename a file, you can do this today. No SEO agency, no new software, no plan upgrade — the free ChatGPT tier is enough.

First — How Google Actually "Sees" Your Images

This is the part that makes the whole trick work, so read it before you skip ahead. Google can't see what's in your photos. It can't look at a picture and know it's a remodeled kitchen. Instead it reads two pieces of text attached to the image — the file name and the alt text — plus the words on the page around it.

That's the problem for most businesses: photos get uploaded straight off the camera as IMG_4821.JPG with the alt text left blank. To Google, that image is invisible. There's nothing to read.

The fix is simple and free: give every image a plain, descriptive file name and a short alt-text description that matches the page it's on. One honest caveat up front — an AI image won't magically rank on its own. Naming and describing it makes it eligible to show up; it earns the spot because it's named, described, and sitting on a page about the same thing.
